Sustainability at Cuan na Gaillimhe Community National School

At Cuan na Gaillimhe Community National School, sustainability is not simply something we teach, it is a way of living, learning and caring for one another and for the Earth.

Inspired by both the Irish Primary Curriculum and our Steiner educational ethos, we nurture children's understanding that every action, no matter how small, can make a positive difference. Through meaningful experiences in nature, creative arts, practical work and community engagement, we encourage our pupils to become thoughtful, responsible and compassionate citizens who value the wellbeing of people and planet.

Our commitment to sustainability includes:

• Caring for our natural environment through outdoor learning, biodiversity projects and appreciation of local habitats.

• Reducing waste by encouraging recycling, reusing materials wherever possible and making thoughtful purchasing decisions.

• Conserving energy and resources by promoting responsible use of electricity, water and materials throughout our school.

• Growing children's understanding of climate action through age appropriate learning experiences connected to the Sustainable Development Goals.

• Supporting wellbeing by recognising that healthy people, healthy communities and a healthy planet are deeply connected.

• Encouraging creativity and craftsmanship by valuing natural materials, repairing rather than replacing, and creating beautiful learning environments with care and intention.

• Building strong partnerships with families and the wider community to create a culture of environmental responsibility and shared stewardship.

As a Community National School with a Steiner inspired approach, we believe children develop a lifelong respect for the world when they experience wonder, gratitude and meaningful relationships with nature. Every season, every story, every garden project and every outdoor adventure helps children discover that they are an important part of the living world.

Sustainability is woven through the life of our school and will continue to guide our decisions as we strive to create a thriving, caring and environmentally responsible community for present and future generations.
