Beyond the Classroom

Initiatives, Enrichment & Community Partnerships

At Cuan na Gaillimhe Community National School, learning extends far beyond the classroom walls. Rooted in our Steiner Waldorf ethos, we believe that children flourish through rich experiences that awaken curiosity, nurture creativity, encourage movement and foster meaningful connections with the world around them.

Our school is a vibrant, living community where education is enriched through exciting initiatives, specialist workshops, cultural experiences, sporting opportunities and wonderful partnerships with parents, local organisations, artists, educators and experts.

Sustainability, Nature & Outdoor Learning

Our connection with nature is at the heart of school life. Through our partnership with Brigit's Garden, children participate in inspiring sustainability projects, exploring biodiversity, bushcraft, traditional woodworking, environmental stewardship and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Our school gardens, seasonal planting, outdoor classrooms, woodland walks and visits to local forests provide opportunities for children to experience the natural world throughout the changing seasons.

We also embrace Forest School experiences, encouraging exploration, imagination, resilience and a lifelong love of nature.

STEM, Science & Discovery

We are passionate about Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), nurturing curious minds through hands-on investigation, experimentation, problem-solving and discovery.

Our children participate in the Galway Science Festival, including science exhibitions and events in November, celebrating their enthusiasm for scientific exploration.

We enrich classroom learning through visiting experts, practical investigations, mathematical challenges and opportunities to explore technology, engineering and coding.

These experiences complement our Steiner approach, where observation, curiosity and learning through doing are central to education.

Gaeilge, Heritage & Irish Culture

Gaeilge is a vibrant and valued part of our school identity. Alongside our structured Irish language programme, we enrich children's learning through storytelling, songs, drama, games and engaging workshops as Gaeilge.

Our partnership with Gaeilge ABC, our weekly Club Gaeilge in collaboration with Ógras, and visits from Irish-language specialists provide wonderful opportunities for children to experience Gaeilge as a living language.

Through the Heritage in Schools programme, we welcome storytellers, historians, musicians, craftspeople and environmental experts who bring Irish history, folklore, traditional skills and cultural heritage to life.

Sport, Movement & Physical Wellbeing

Movement and physical activity are essential elements of our Steiner educational approach. Throughout the year, children enjoy a rich programme of swimming, gymnastics, tennis, tag rugby and athletics, supported by specialist coaches and local sporting partnerships.

These experiences nurture coordination, confidence, teamwork, resilience and a lifelong enjoyment of physical activity. Outdoor play, movement games, nature walks and rhythmic activities are also woven into our daily school life.

Music, Arts, Drama & Handwork

Creativity is woven through every aspect of our school. Children experience music, singing, drama, painting, drawing, modelling, craft and artistic expression as meaningful parts of their education.

Music is woven beautifully into the rhythm of our school day. Alongside our whole-school choir, children enjoy learning the ukulele, pentatonic flute and tin whistle, guided by our talented teachers. Through singing and instrumental music, we nurture musical confidence, creativity, listening skills and the joy of making music together.

Traditional handwork, including knitting, crochet, embroidery and cross-stitch, develops patience, concentration, dexterity and creativity.

We also enjoy enriching cultural experiences, including visits to Baboró International Arts Festival for Children, theatre performances, exhibitions and creative workshops.

Enrichment & Extracurricular Activities

Our learning community continues to grow beyond the school day through a varied programme of extracurricular opportunities.

These include Forest School, drama, music, traditional handwork and Club Gaeilge, alongside new opportunities in eurythmy, coding and Philosophy for Children as these programmes are introduced.

Each activity offers children opportunities to discover new interests, develop talents, form friendships and experience the joy of learning in different ways.

Wellbeing, Relationships & Restorative Practice

We believe that children's emotional and social wellbeing is fundamental to their learning and development.

As a RELATE Discovery School, we place great importance on nurturing positive relationships, emotional regulation, empathy, inclusion and a strong sense of belonging.

Our staff engage in ongoing professional learning in restorative practice, relational approaches and supporting children's social and emotional development.

Through our Golden Agreements, daily rhythms, meaningful relationships and restorative conversations, we nurture a school culture rooted in kindness, respect, safety, courage and mutual support.

Learning from Experts & Growing as Educators

We regularly welcome visiting artists, musicians, scientists, storytellers, craftspeople, environmental educators and other specialists who share their knowledge, skills and enthusiasm with our children.

Our teachers also engage in continuous professional development, including mentoring and training with experienced Steiner Waldorf educators, visiting teacher trainers, curriculum specialists and educational support services.

This commitment to professional learning allows us to continually deepen our Steiner practice while embracing developments in Irish primary education.

Our Community as Partners in Education

Community is at the heart of everything we do.

Our parents, families, local organisations, cultural institutions and community partners bring an extraordinary richness to school life. Whether sharing a traditional skill, helping in our gardens, supporting a festival, contributing to a workshop or accompanying children on an educational outing, each person has something valuable to offer.

Our seasonal celebrations, school gatherings, performances, nature experiences and community initiatives create a strong sense of connection and belonging.

We believe education flourishes when school, home and community work together, creating a nurturing environment where children feel supported, inspired and deeply connected to the world around them.

At Cuan na Gaillimhe CNS, education is a living tapestry of learning, creativity, movement, nature and community, where every experience offers another opportunity for children to grow, discover and flourish.
