Our Ethos

Rooted in Community, Nurtured Through Wonder, Growing Together

A Place Where Childhood is Cherished

At Cuan na Gaillimhe Community National School ~ A Steiner Education, we offer a warm, inclusive and nurturing primary education where childhood is cherished, individuality is celebrated and learning comes alive through imagination, creativity, nature and meaningful experiences.

Our unique school ethos brings together three complementary foundations, Galway and Roscommon Education and Training Board (GRETB) patronage, Steiner Waldorf education and our identity as a Community National School.

Together, these create a rich, child-centred education that nurtures the head, heart and hands, helping every child grow in confidence, curiosity, kindness and a lifelong love of learning.

GRETB Our Patron and Shared Values

As a GRETB Community National School, we are guided by the five core values of the ETBI Patrons' Framework on Ethos: Excellence in Education, Care, Equality, Community and Respect.

These values are woven into the everyday life of our school. We strive for excellence by nurturing each child's academic, creative, emotional, social and practical abilities. Care is expressed through warm, trusting relationships where children feel safe, seen and valued. Equality ensures that every child and family is welcomed and respected, regardless of background, ability, culture or belief.

Community reflects our belief that education is a shared journey between children, families, educators and the wider world. Respect grows through kindness, empathy, gratitude, responsibility and care for one another and the natural environment. GRETB provides the inclusive educational framework and support within which our distinctive Steiner Waldorf approach can flourish.

Our Steiner Waldorf Ethos: Educating the Head, Heart and Hands

At the heart of Steiner Waldorf education is a deep reverence for childhood and an understanding that every child unfolds through their own unique journey of development.

We nurture the whole child through an education that balances intellectual learning, artistic expression, practical activity and emotional wellbeing.

Our classrooms are warm, beautiful and purposeful spaces, enriched by natural materials, gentle rhythms and the changing seasons. Storytelling, poetry, music, movement, painting, drawing, drama and handwork awaken imagination and bring joy and meaning to learning.

Through our main lesson approach, children explore subjects deeply over time, weaving together stories, observation, discussion, artistic expression, practical experiences and written work. This helps learning become meaningful, memorable and connected to life.

Daily and weekly rhythms, morning verses, seasonal festivals and moments of reflection bring security, belonging and a sense of wonder.

Nature is one of our greatest teachers. Through gardening, outdoor learning, woodland experiences and seasonal observation, children develop curiosity, gratitude and a loving responsibility towards the earth.

Our Steiner Waldorf approach is woven through the Irish Primary School Curriculum, enriching literacy, numeracy, science, history, geography, languages and all areas of learning with creativity, imagination and hands-on experiences.

Above all, we seek to nurture confident, compassionate, capable children who think independently, act purposefully and meet the world with courage and an open heart.

Our Community National School: A Place for Everyone

As a Community National School, we are a state, co-educational, multi-denominational primary school welcoming children and families of all cultures, backgrounds, traditions, religions and beliefs.

Inclusion, equality, diversity and belonging are at the heart of our school community. We celebrate the uniqueness of every child while recognising the shared humanity that connects us all.

Through the Goodness Me! Goodness You! (GMGY) curriculum, children explore identity, values, beliefs, different worldviews and life's big questions. Storytelling, thoughtful conversations and reflection nurture empathy, understanding, curiosity and respect.

This approach complements our Steiner Waldorf ethos beautifully, encouraging children to wonder, question, listen and develop a deep appreciation of themselves, others and the world around them.

Community at Our Heart Growing Together

At Cuan na Gaillimhe, we believe children flourish when surrounded by a caring community where home and schoolwork together.

Parents are our partners in education. We value parents as their children's first educators and warmly welcome the knowledge, creativity, experiences and gifts they bring to school life.

Through open communication, seasonal festivals, shared celebrations, gardening, music, storytelling, handwork, community projects and everyday connections, we create a living school community where everyone has something meaningful to contribute.

We also embrace the rich traditions, natural beauty and wider community of Galway, helping children develop a strong sense of place, belonging and connection to the world around them.

Three Foundations, One Living Ethos

What makes Cuan na Gaillimhe special is the way our three foundations are woven together.

GRETB patronage grounds us in excellence, care, equality, community and respect.

Steiner Waldorf education brings imagination, creativity, rhythm, reverence for childhood and a holistic approach to learning. Our Community National School identity ensures that every child and family is welcomed, diversity is celebrated and community remains at the heart of education.

Together, they create an education that is academically strong, artistically rich, emotionally nurturing, socially inclusive and deeply connected to nature.

We hope every child who journeys through our school carries with them a love of learning, confidence in their unique gifts, compassion for others, an appreciation of beauty and a lifelong sense of wonder.

A place to belong.

A place to grow.

A place to flourish.

Rooted in care.
